What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures are a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums and may require adhesive, implant dentures snap onto or are permanently fixed to implants embedded in the jawbone.

This connection provides a level of stability and security that traditional dentures simply cannot match. You’ll be able to eat, speak, and laugh without worrying about your dentures slipping or shifting.

The Implant Denture Process

The implant denture process begins with a comprehensive examination, including CT/Cone Beam scans, to evaluate your jawbone and plan the optimal placement of your implants.

During the surgical phase, implants are placed into the jawbone. After a healing period that allows the implants to fuse with the bone, your custom denture is fabricated and attached. For eligible patients, temporary teeth can be placed on the same day as implant surgery.

Fixed vs. Removable Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures, also known as permanent implant dentures, are secured to the implants and can only be removed by a dentist. They feel and function most like natural teeth and typically require four to six implants per arch.

Removable implant dentures snap onto the implants and can be taken out for cleaning. They require fewer implants (usually two to four) and are generally more affordable while still providing significantly better stability than traditional dentures.

Fixed: permanent, most natural feel, 4-6 implants
Removable: snap-on, easy cleaning, 2-4 implants
Both options eliminate the need for adhesives

Benefits of Implant Dentures

Implant dentures offer the best of both worlds: the full-arch restoration of dentures combined with the stability and bone-preserving benefits of dental implants.

Patients who switch from traditional dentures to implant dentures consistently report improved comfort, better chewing ability, and increased confidence. Because the implants stimulate the jawbone, they also help prevent the bone loss and facial changes that occur with traditional dentures over time.

Superior stability compared to traditional dentures
Preserve jawbone and prevent facial changes
Improved chewing ability and diet variety
Increased confidence and quality of life
